PB: Pariser only wanted half a village
by SDM
One of the advantages of age is that you tend to recall things that some folks would like to forget. For instance, do all of you who live South of SW 168th Street know that Vice Mayor Pariser never wanted you to be part of Palmetto Bay? Yes, that includes all of you CCOCI folks, too.
Oh, you don’t believe SDM? Look at this article from the Miami Herald dated March 23, 1995:
NEIGHBORHOODS SEEK STUDY ON INCORPORATION GROUP EAST OF U.S. 1 SEEKS FACTS
OSCAR MUSIBAY Herald Staff Writer
Prompted by efforts of other Dade neighborhoods to incorporate, some residents living east of U.S. 1 between Southwest 136th and 168th streets want a study of how much it costs them to be a part of Metro government.
Residents of East Grove Estates and five other neighborhoods are circulating a petition asking Dade County to compare taxes paid by residents within the area to money spent for Metro services. The area is mainly made of single-family homes.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean we want to incorporate, but we want to know the facts,” said Brian Pariser, president of the East Grove Estates Homeowners Association. “We don’t want to be left out of something, nor do we want people to be makers of our fate.”
The coalition of residents will have a town meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 14260 Old Cutler Rd., to discuss the issue.
Pariser’s group wants the county to provide a feasibility study of about 20,000 people who live between Southwest 136th Street on the north, 168th Street on the south, Biscayne Bay on the east and South Dixie Highway on the west.
Areas to the north and south of East Grove Estates already are investigating incorporation.
In November, residents of Perrine and Cutler Ridge to the south formed a steering committee to report on whether Perrine, Cutler Ridge and Saga Bay could support their own government.
Pariser said the study area is too wide and would thin resources.
To the north, the Pinecrest/Palmetto area also is meeting to assess its chances as a municipality.
If anyone thinks SDM is overstating Mr. Pariser’s position, why not ask some of the key founders who are still around? Eyewitnesses are invited to comment on this post. Tell SDM how this blog’s version of events is wrong.
SDM Wonders: Why did Mr. Pariser want to cut-off the village boundary at SW 168th Street? SDM heard rumors for years it was because Pariser and his neighbors thought the southern neighborhoods weren’t compatible with the northern ones. (Not compatible is a code word for some other very unkind terms.)
Fortunately, the narrow-minded Mr. Pariser was overruled by the wise founders who argued pragmatically that a city of the size Pariser imagined could not support itself.
SDM Says: If one wonders about the roots of Mr. Pariser’s divisive tenure on the council, one should start at the beginning when his words were unguarded.
Just how desperate are you folks to discredit Mr. Pariser? If you look hard enough you might find he was late for school one day in the 3rd grade. Mr. Dubois is spending more money (including PAC money) to get elected than every other candidate for council and vice-mayor combined – but no comment on buying an election from South Dade Matters? Hired hands for Mr. Dubois knocking on doors and telling residents Mr. Pariser is a “tax and spend Democrat” even though this is a non-partisan election. The holier than thou folks at SDM like to hand out judgements supporting their political agenda but conveniently overlook issues inconvenient to their agenda. Imagine the fury we would see from you folks if Mr. Pariser campaigned declaring a political party affiliation. And to imply that the village government might tamper with absentee ballots is beneath even you.
You are correct SDM. The only representatives south of SW 168 Street on the Palmetto Bay Steering Committee were Al Lavoie, Julie Lavoie and Ed Ludovici. But for them, the area south of 168 street would not be in Palmetto Bay. We were the poor folks that no one wanted.
Have to agree with Chuck. Why no comments on the outrageous amount being spent on a local campaign and where the money is coming from? Should Palmetto Bay vote for someone who willfully ignores existing laws?
[Ed Note: SDM edited out a specific charge against a candidate because SDM understands the matter has not been adjudicated. Nevertheless, SDM sympathizes with anyone who gets cross-wise with local governments. The county operates on auto-pilot just as does Palmetto Bay when it comes to heavy handed code enforcement.
The more interesting point you raise is why vote for someone like Mr. Pariser who knowingly seconds and votes for the Palmer Trinity item when it violates the law? It's a good point and one that has cost this village at least $500,000 so far and is likely to cost much more.]
SDM notes you didn’t address the central allegation in the post, Mr. Latshaw, which is curious since you were there at the time.
You don’t seem to have any outrage about the fact that Mr. Pariser is self-financing about 40% of his campaign, yet you have some problem with Mr. Dubois spending his money to protect his property values and rights?
With respect to someone misleading a voter, SDM is little more jaded than you are, especially after seeing one of Mr. Pariser’s supporters written up by the cops for stealing campaign signs. Who is it that is overlooking issues again?
SDM does not agree with the comment alleging the village might mess with absentee ballots, but just in case SDM’s ballot will go to the county elections department.
Chucky Cheese your candidate’s on his way out. His wife is slandering Mr. DuBois by telling [lies to] anyone who will listen…[SDM Edited the sentence.] No amount of lies or hyperbole will buy baby Brian the election. Kiss him goodbye.
Did you ever consider that Pariser was right? Think about it if Pariser had gotten his way and Palmetto Bay ended at 168 street.
No Palmer.
No Thalatta or Palmetto Bay park fiascos
No Charter School litigation.
No Stanczyk, Lindsay, Templer, Hermann, Clifford
No shed ordinance fiasco
[SDM Ed.:
No city hall.
No public-private parking garage.
No abandoned skate park.
No food trucks at Palmetto Bay Village Center.
Anyone else want to play?]
Hello, from Canada. (No, I’m not trying to escape the Neighborhood Protection Ordinance by moving to the Great White North.)
I will have very little internet access for the next couple of days and as my friends keep asking me “Why So Serious David?”, I’ve decided to have some fun with the characters of Star Wars. I must tell you that the Star Wars series are my favorite Science Fiction movies because my father took me to see the original and I’ve luckily had the opportunity to share these movies with my children.
Therefore, for giggles, I have recast Palmetto Bay political lumimaries, (thank you South Dade Matters for indirectly giving me the idea) as Star Wars characters. Some people will agree with my recasting and some won’t, but please remember it’s all in good fun.
Five main characters, which were very easy to recast;
Darth Sidious – Joan Lindsay, I think this recasting speaks for itself. There has been a direct correlation between her appointment on the Council and the downward spiral of the Village. She and her band of misfits have lured Mayor Shelly Stanczyk to the Dark Side.
Darth Vader – Shelley Stanczyk, Shelley’s inner-turmoil between the Force and the Dark Side. It’s unfortunate that the Dark side seems to be winning with no possible redemption.
Luke Skywalker – John DuBios, along with the silent majority of Palmetto Bay residents, the Dark Side will get defeated in the end.
Princess Leia – Who else could play the part besides the lovely Karyn Cunningham
Han Solo – Howard Tendrich, I’m hoping with a little prodding that Howard will realize the only way to avenge his election defeat will be to continue to fight the Dark Side, whether he’s on the council or not. I’m rooting for you Howard.
Supporting cast of characters:
Obi Wan Kenobi -Jim Araiza, in my version of events Obi Wan is the final nail in Darth Vader’s coffin, not the other way around.
Grand Muff Tarkin – Brian Pariser, commander of the first Death Star, which is destroyed with him on it by Luke Skywalker.
Anakin Skywalker – Tim Schaffer, his character is at the crossroads in life but he eventually decides to be transformed to the Dark Side by Darth Sidious…… or does he?
Jar Jar Binks – David Zisman, just as Jar Jar Binks couldn’t keep his mouth closed for any extended period of time in the movie, Zisman appears to have the same issue.
Chewbacca – JB Harris, serious who yells louder than JB Harris?
Yoda – South Dade Matters, for his/her brilliant writing and insight.
Ok, so there you have it, my not so serious blog for the day. If I’ve missed any characters please send me your thoughts, I’d be interested in feedback.
All joking aside, please remember we must do our part and vote for John Dubois and Jim Araiza on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.
David Singer
No single family home being used as a Public Works yard. With beautiful Key West style metal roof. I sure do love how they can use their single family home as they choose, but don’t you so much as pass gas on your property, which by the way violates the NPO as to odors and noise.
It concerns me that Brian’s people may be working on voters while Dubois people spend most of their time writing on blogs….
As she writes on a blog… Irony lives.
I wish that the candidates AND their supporters would tell me what the candidates will do for our Village….that should be a charter amendment! Address only the issues and what you would do to resolve. Any violations and we would call in the State Attorney for fines and possible dismissal! Where do I sign up for the next Charter Amendment Committee??
You cannot sign up for the next charter committee. Those plum jobs only go to BFFs of the mayor, like Bev Gerald, who headed the last committee and rammed through her and the three amigos’ pet proposals without so much as a nod to the objectors. We live under a dictatorship in a Democratic country. Civics courses never taught me that anything like the PB council was ever possible. Glad they don’t control the police.
How do we know that they don’t control the police? We always hear stories of the police being called on people like Jerry Templar, and then we mysteriously dont hear any more about it…….Kinda makes you wonder.
You don’t hear anymore because the police don’t do anything to them..like the lady with the signs in her pick up…..nothing….nothing….did I say lady?
