Joe Garcia and the Big Lie
It’s double bonus day at SDM thanks to the revelations of attempted absentee ballot rigging in last year’s election for Florida’s 26th Congressional District, which is now represented by Congressman Joe Garcia.
SDM claims jurisdiction because Congressman Garcia’s district covers – roughly – the western half of South Dade (click here for a map).
First-term Representative Garcia claims absolute ignorance of any attempt to submit “fraudulent online requests for the Aug. 14 primaries,” as the Miami Herald put it. In an Obama-like denial, Garcia says he knew nothing:
In a news conference held at his West Miami-Dade office Saturday morning, Garcia, a Democrat, maintained that he had no knowledge of the failed plot during last year’s primary election. He said he learned about his campaign’s involvement only the previous afternoon from chief of staff Jeffrey Garcia, who is unrelated to the congressman and has long served as his top political strategist.
As if it would be a salve for the electoral wound, Garcia went on to say that he “cannot stress how angry [he was] at these events.” SDM should feel much better, but these statements beg a scary question: Is Garcia’s ignorance a duplicitous act of willful ignorance or is he unable to manage what his subordinates are doing in his name?
And there’s something else about the denial that sounds fishy to SDM’s virginal ears. After stressing that no actual ballots were tampered with, Garcia called the scheme “ill conceived.” Ill conceived???? Does the Congressman mean that a better conceived plan would be one that no one discovered? Or, one that succeeded in its attempt to tamper?
Perhaps the truth about Garcia’s acts can be found in the alternative defense of “everyone does it”: “I explain it with the reckless abandon that we play politics in South Florida,” he said. “It shouldn’t be that way.” SDM’s reply is one a mother would say: If everyone jumped off the Brooklyn bridge, does that mean you would too? So much for leadership.
SDM Says: The State Attorney – also a Democrat – will not accept a couple of low level staffers acting as sacrificial lambs when she knows full well this seat will be targeted by the national parties next year. Congressman Garcia should brace himself for a long hot summer.
