PB: Holding a Meeting on Memorial Day?
No, not really…SDM is just teasing about a funny typo on the village website’s Public Meetings page.
In fact, the council is set to meet on Tuesday, September 3rd, in another super secret meeting to discuss two Palmer lawsuits (Case Nos. 08-28977 CA 30 and 10-34016 CA 20). The advertised purpose for meeting outside the public’s view is to seek “advice from the Village Council regarding litigation strategy and/or settlement.”
Advice? From the Village Council? Really? Maybe the village attorney is trying to figure out how to sell some old furniture or needs to trim one of her mangroves.
Seriously, though, the state law says that “[t]he subject matter of the meeting shall be confined to settlement negotiations or strategy sessions related to litigation expenditures.” (§ 286.011, Fla. Stat.) Talking about whether to spend money on more litigation is different from talking about “litigation strategy.” Some day, this issue is going to get the attention it deserves.
What SDM reads from the tea leaves is that the village must have received a settlement deal that resolves both of the pending Palmer cases. Unfortunately, the village council is so insecure and suspicious of residents and voters that they will hold this critical debate behind closed doors.
SDM Says: Regardless of how we got here, it’s a good sign that a settlement may be on the horizon. We can’t wait to find out what the terms are and how much Mayor Stanczyk’s motion cost our little burgh.
